OLD SAMMY CROW Stars and Stripes Challenge

Thanks for stopping in to take a peek at my offering for the Olde Primitive Sisters Online Marketplace Memorial Day Challenge- Stars and Stripes!
I have here Mr. Sammy Crow! He is made from my own pattern using aged, stained, sanded and colorwashed muslin. He has been aged to prefection and rubbed with cinnamon for that old dirty look. I have felted Sammy a wool goatee and his white wooly locks peekout from under his hat brim. He has lightly quilted wings securely attached to each side.

His hat is made from several patriotic themed fabrics which has been stained and spiced heavily.
In his beak he holds two dangling stars made from a stars and stripes fabric which has been haeavily stained. They have rusted bells attached on both sides.

Around his neck he wears a tie of patriotic fabric with a tiny rusted bell.

Sammy is perched on a make do which has been painted, sanded, sealed and spiced to look aged, old and worn. I have attached a rag bow in a red and cream check to the base.

Sammy measures 18" at the tallest point of his hat and is 16" in length.

Old Sammy Crow would make a great addition to any primitive lovers collection or for those patriotic at heart!
Shipping is $8.00 for the continental USA. All others should use the email order form and contact me for shipping quotes.
Thanks for visting OLD SAMMY CROW!

A Man Out Standing In His Field
|
Welcome to my latest listing. Many thanks for stopping in!
This listing is for my "A Man Out Standing In His Field" original folk art piece. Originally created for the Kentucky Folk Art Center, I am now offering it for sale-at a reduced price!
It has to be one of my most favored creations.

Let me give you an inside glimpse of how my mind works and my creation come into being.
I have long wanted to create something about the "Passion" of the Christ. My mind kept going to the cross standing on a hill out in a field. I kept rolling it around and finally it hit me that Christ was truly a man outstanding in his field, just as the cross was out standing in a field.

I added the crow to the right of him sitting on the cross and my husband asked me why. Well, first, I love crows.
Secondly, in mythology and folklore as a whole, crows tend to be symbolic more of the spiritual aspect of death, or the transition of the spirit into the afterlife. I like to think it was the crow that guided Christ into heaven where the dove awaited to greet him.

When I added the sheep at his feet, my dear hubby again asked me why. I thought this should be obvious, but maybe not. Jesus is known as the Shepard. Even in times of great peril the Shepard tends his flock. The sheep represent the human race being watched over, even in the darkest hour, by Christ.

The wood plague above his head which reads INRI which was meant as insult at his crucifixion, but today symbolizes his kingship of all who come to him. INRI is an acronym of the Latin phrase IESVS·NAZARENVS·REX·IVDÆORVM, which translates to English as: "Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews".

I did not create this item to offend anyone. IT is NOT meant to be an idol of worship. It is simply my artistic expression of the Passion of the Christ.

Now for the details-
Measurements:
Height: 30"
Width: 20.5" at widest

The sheep are made with muslin and wool from my sheep that is felted into place. They have tiny stick legs.
The cross and base are stained wood and were created by my darling hubby just for this piece.
